Zero Fee Credit Card Processing in Louisiana: How It Really Works

"Zero fee credit card processing" is one of the most searched phrases in payments, and one of the most abused. The idea is simple and real: instead of you paying 2.5 to 3.5 percent of every sale to accept cards, the program is structured so your processing cost drops to zero. The question is never whether that is possible. It is whether the program doing it is built honestly.
Here is how the honest version works, and how to spot the other kind.
The mechanics
A legitimate zero fee program in Louisiana is a cash discount program. Your posted prices become the regular price, cash customers get a discount at the register, and the spread covers your processing. You keep 100 percent of your posted price on card sales, and your monthly processing bill effectively disappears.
Notice what that is not: it is not a fee added to card payments. Since Act 751 took effect, adding a fee to a debit card transaction is against Louisiana law, not just card brand rules. The difference between the legal structure and the illegal one comes down to how the register math runs, and that is a configuration choice, not a slogan.
What it looks like day to day
Merchants always ask what changes for their customers. In a well-run program, less than you would think:
- Signage at the door and register explains the pricing simply. Customers in Louisiana have seen this at gas stations their whole lives. Cash price, regular price.
- Receipts show the discount clearly for cash payers.
- Card customers pay the posted price. No surprise line items, which is exactly why the setup holds up.
We run our programs on Clover, configured so the pricing, receipts, and signage all tell the same story. That last sentence is the entire compliance conversation in miniature: when the three disagree, you have a problem, and when they agree, you do not.
What zero fee saves in practice
A restaurant doing $60,000 a month in card volume at an effective 3 percent rate pays about $1,800 a month in processing, over $21,000 a year. A cash discount program takes that line to roughly zero. For a lot of the independent restaurants, food trucks, and shops we work with across South Louisiana, that is the difference between a stressful year and a new piece of equipment, a hire, or just breathing room. Questions to ask any provider (including us)
- Does the program add a fee to debit cards? (After Act 751, the only acceptable answer is no.)
- Will you provide the signage and receipt configuration, or is that on me?
- What happens if a customer complains about the pricing?
- Will you put your compliance claims in writing?
We answer that last one with our Compliance Guarantee, and we keep a free plain-English guide to the new law at act751.com. If you want to see what zero fee would look like on your volume, talk to us. We are local, and this is what we do.
